Last Updated on April 24, 2023 by Nikki Jain

St. Augustine is the old, continually inhabited city in the US, which means it has its fair share of ghosties.

Don't believe us?

Then, we dare you to spend the night in one of these haunted hotels in St. Augustine!

And, if you do believe us but are curious and interested in having your own ghostly experience, we definitely recommend checking out one (or all) of these hotels!

We can hear all of the non-believer's eyes roll. And that's totally fine. We get it. We're hella skeptical. But we've had weird experiences we can't explain. You can make fun of us and this post if you want, but it's way more fun to get into the ghost stories and enjoy the ride.

List of the Best Haunted Hotels in St. Augustine

There are plenty of hotels in historic St. Augustine, and you could probably make the argument that all of them are haunted. But there are a few acclaimed haunted St. Augustine hotels.

Now, these hotels do not use being haunted as their big draw. We saw one that actually listed it on its website, but the others seemed to keep it on the DL, which kind of makes sense.

These are luxury hotels that charge a pretty penny for each night, and being haunted doesn't exactly fit their brand.

Without further ado, let's jump into the list!

1: Casablanca Inn On the Bay

This gorgeous hotel is located right on Matanzas Bay, making it an ideal place to stay whether you're looking for a relaxing weekend or a spooky experience.

This inn features the Tini Martini Bar, which is well-renowned on its own. You can sit outside on the porch, sipping your martini, staring out at the Bay. It's beautiful!

Haunted History

Every supposed haunting has a story behind it. So, what's the deal with this Bayfront Inn in St. Augustine, FL?

According to Ghosts and Gravestones, The Casablanca was originally a boarding house in the early 1900s. The woman who ran the popular business fell into hard times, which pushed her to aid rum runners during the prohibition. She was never caught.

Some people who stay there claim to have witnessed a woman from another era walking around (rumored to be the original owner), a lantern swinging in the window, and footsteps when no one is around.

Reviews

There are plenty of hotels in St. Augustine, FL, that are not reportedly haunted. And honestly, at first glance, you'd think Casablanca Inn is one of them.

We couldn't find any mention of the hauntings on their site. Sure, it could be tucked away on there, but it's certainly not prominently displayed.

One guest wrote an interesting review on Trip Advisor, complaining that no one told her it was haunted. Apparently, she and her husband stay there for a few nights for an anniversary trip, and they experienced strange things. She claimed that the light in their room would inexplicably turn on and off. Of course, being fed up with this, they unplugged it, and it still happened... You can read the full review here.

To us, that review speaks volumes to this hotel's haunted reputation. If you don't go in expecting to experience anything weird, but you do, that is pretty significant.

Another guest mentioned the fact that they had strange experiences. They even mentioned that something pulled the covers off of them while they slept...Yikes!

But, for every review that mentioned something about the hotel being haunted, there were many that made no mention of it.

2: St. Francis Inn

As far as hotels in downtown St. Augustine, FL, go, the St. Francis Inn is definitely in one of the quietest locations!

It's located on the quiet side of St. George Street. But, it's a short 5-7 minute walk from the bustling end of the street.

While it's off the beaten path, it's still well within walking distance of a lot of the main attractions.

Haunted History

Now, unlike the Casablanca Inn, we were able to find mention of ghosts on St. Francis Inn's website. But it wasn't easy.

According to St. Francis Inn, the resident ghost is named Lily. She was a young house servant. Apparently, there is one specific room in which there have been numerous strange happenings, which is now called "Lily's Room."

So, now you know which room to request when you visit!

Apparently, in Lily's Room, some women have found their makeup bags moved or filled with water.

There have been a lot of incidents in Lily's Room. Way too many for us to summarize, so we highly recommend that you go read the article on the St. Francis Inn website.

If you really want a paranormal experience, that sounds like the right room to stay in.

The St. Francis Inn has excellent reviews on Booking.com.

This is an excellent choice, even if you decide that you don't want to stay in Lily's Room.

Now, after going through some of the Trip Advisor reviews, we didn't see any mention of paranormal experiences as we saw for the Casablanca Inn.

So, you pretty much need to take the St. Francis Inn at its word of being haunted. Of course, even if you don't end up walking away with a paranormal experience, you'll still end up having a great time since this bed and breakfast is clearly focused on providing excellent service!

3: Casa Monica

Casa Monica

Casa Monica is the most prestigious hotel on this list. In fact, when the King of Spain came into town for St. Augustine's 500-year anniversary, he stayed at the Casa Monica!

Now, Casa Monica, like the other hotels on this list, prides itself on keeping its classic decor.

Even if you don't stay at the Casa Monica, it's well worth walking through the lobby. It's absolutely gorgeous and features incredibly regal decor and furnishings.

Haunted History

According to Haunted Rooms America, most of Casa Monica's ghostly activity occurs on the 4th floor. So, if you'd like a ghostly experience, it looks like that floor is a good bet.

There have been reported incidents of ghostly children running up and down the hallways when the floor is empty. There have also been apparitions (specifically in room 411 and the Ponce de Leon Suite).

Unlike the other two hotels on this list, there doesn't seem to be any specific person or event that the haunted activity is linked to. Haunted Rooms America states that a man allegedly hung himself in room 511, which could certainly be a contributing factor.

Casa Monica even made it onto Marriott's list of most haunted hotels in America due to the numerous reports from guests and staff.
