The USS South Dakota fought bravely in major WWII battles from 1942 to 1945 to become a highly decorated ship.

It disabled 32 Japanese planes and was the initial ship to attack the Japanese home islands.

They saved what they could, poured a concrete outline in Sioux Falls' Sherman Park, and used the salvaged pieces to complete a miniature replica of the great battleship.
